Serotonin and the Mesenteric Circulation

چکیده
1: 16). After the epidemic 89 (77%) had a four-fold titre rise. Of those under 20 years of age 46 out of 50 had posi, tive titres after the infection. Clinical illness occurred in over 50% of infected subjects. Five years later a follow-up study was done using 75-g oral carbohydrate load glucose tolerance test. Serum neutralizing antibody titres and two-hour plasma glucose levels were measured. Of the 136 persons under 25 years of age (M.= 65, F.= 71) the highest two-hour plasma glucose was 133 mg/100 ml. Persistence of positive titre levels was also documented since 77% of these subjects had a positive neutralizing antibody titre level. Even though it was in the young diabetic that Dr. Gamble and his colleagues were able to show the strongest association with positive Coxsackie B4 titres we could not show that Coxsackie B4 infection caused a single case of diabetes, though the attack rate in the 136 under 20 years of age at the time of the epidemic was extremely high. -We are, etc., STEPHEN E. Responsiveness of isolated cerebral and peripheral arteries to serotonin, norepinephrine, and transmural electrical stimulation.
Spirally cut strips of cerebral and peripheral arteries from dogs were used for comparing the vasoconstricting effect of serotonin, norepinephrine, K + , and transmural electrical stimulation. Sensitivity of cerebral (basilar, posterior cerebral, and middle cerebral) arterial strips to serotonin was markedly greater than that to norepinephrine with respect to the median effective concentration ...
متن کاملS1P1 Receptor Modulation Preserves Vascular Function in Mesenteric and Coronary Arteries after CPB in the Rat Independent of Depletion of Lymphocytes
BACKGROUND Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may induce systemic inflammation and vascular dysfunction. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) modulates various vascular and immune responses. Here we explored whether agonists of the S1P receptors, FTY720 and SEW2871 improve vascular reactivity after CPB in the rat. METHODS Experiments were done in male Wistar rats (total n = 127). Anesthesia was induced by...
متن کاملVascular responsiveness to serotonin metabolites in mineralocorticoid hypertension.
This study characterizes vascular responsiveness to serotonin and its metabolites and to several monoamines that are structurally related to serotonin in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertension. Mesenteric arteries from normotensive and hypertensive rats were excised and cut into helical strips for isometric force recording. Dose-response curves to serotonin in arteries from hypert...
متن کاملA method for studying isolated resistance vessels from rabbit mesentery and brain and their responses to drugs.
A technique has been developed for studying the reactivity of single, isolated resistance vessels, 50 to 250 u, o.d., perfused at constant flow rate. The validity of the method is established because responses to a given stimulating agent are reproducible and stable over a reasonable period of time. The magnitude of the response is dependent on the perfusion pressure, being maximal at a physiol...
متن کاملContrasting effects of phorbol esters on serotonin- and vasopressin-evoked contractions in rat aorta and small mesenteric artery.
Phorbol esters, which activate protein kinase C, modulate vasoconstrictor-induced tension in vascular smooth muscle. We examined the effects of phorbol esters (phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate [PDBu] and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate [TPA]) on receptor agonist (serotonin [5-HT] and arginine vasopressin [AVP])-, high K(+)-, and caffeine-induced contractions in rings of rat aorta and a small (seco...
متن کامل5-HT is a potent relaxant in rat superior mesenteric veins
Serotonin (5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptamine) reduces blood pressure of the conscious rat when administered chronically (1 week). 5-HT does not directly relax isolated arteries, and microsphere experiments in 5-HT-infused rats suggested that 5-HT increased flow to the splanchnic bed. We hypothesized that 5-HT increased splanchnic flow because of direct venous relaxation; our focus was thus on the super...
